Eye Examinations

At Marshall Opticians, we’ve been proudly caring for our community’s eyes since 1985, from our welcoming practices in Builth Wells and Llandrindod Wells. As a friendly, independent opticians in the heart of Powys, we’re known for providing exceptional clinical care, one-to-one attention, and beautiful, hand-picked eyewear.

We don’t rush. We take the time to really get to know you, listen to your concerns, and offer expert, honest advice tailored to your needs.

Private Eye Examinations with OCT as Standard

Our private extended eye examinations last around 40 minutes, giving us plenty of time to carry out a truly thorough check of your eye health and vision. All parts of the exam are carried out by a qualified optometrist, never an unqualified assistant. There’s no pre-screening room here, just one-to-one care from start to finish — nothing rushed, and certainly nothing that feels like being on a conveyor belt.

Our private exam includes OCT scanning as standard, allowing us to look beneath the surface of the eye and pick up signs of issues such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic changes, often before any symptoms are noticed.

Most of our patients choose this enhanced option because it offers such a comprehensive picture of their eye health. You're not just paying for a scan, you’re investing in our time, expertise, and the peace of mind that comes with it.

After your eye examination, we’ll guide you through a personal frame consultation, helping you choose from our carefully curated collection of eyewear from quirky and bold to classic and understated.

NHS Eye Examinations

If you’re eligible for an NHS-funded eye test, you’ll still receive excellent care from our qualified optometrists. And if you’d like the added reassurance of an extended exam and OCT scan — plus plenty of time to discuss any concerns — you can upgrade to our private extended eye examination at any time.

We believe everyone deserves the best possible eyecare, not just the basics, and we’re here to help you choose what’s right for you.

It’s completely up to you, and we’ll always talk you through your options clearly and kindly.

OCT Technology

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a hospital-grade imaging technology that gives us a detailed, 3D scan of your retina. It helps us detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease much earlier than traditional methods.

This quick, non-invasive scan is included in our private eye exams and is an essential tool for modern eye care. We’ll take the time to show you the images and explain everything, no jargon, no rush.
